油 脂 引 起 的 兵 變for 150 years the british east india company ruled india through an army of indian soldiers commanded by british officers. in 1857, the indian soldiers started a mutiny, which led to the company's dissolution and the transference of its administrative powers to the british crown.
the immediate cause of the mutiny was the new enfield rifle. to load the rifle a soldier had to bite the cartridge open. word spread among the troops, which comprised both hindus and muslims, that the paper cartridges were greased with lard, regarded as unclean by muslims, or beef fat, regarded as sacred by hindus. outraged by what they saw as religious persecution, the soldiers in bengal mutinied and killed their british officers, and the insurrection quickly spread into the ganges valley and central india.
