in 1942, the japanese invaded and occupied the american islands of attu and kiska. in may 1943, the americans retook attu in a bloodbath, and then headed for kiska.
on 15 august 1943, the 7th division of the united states and the 13th infantry brigade of canada landed on opposite shores of kiska, unopposed but expecting another bloodbath. thick fog made it impossible to see the enemy, and soon heavy gunfire was heard. after two days of fierce fighting, in which 32 american and canadian soldiers were killed and more than 50 were wounded, the allies found out that there was in fact no enemy. the japanese, realising that the isolated island was no longer protectable, had slipped away before the allies arrived. americans and canadians had only been shooting one another.
