in january 1929, a misdirected package from berlin arrived at the customs office in warsaw, poland. it was quickly followed by a german official, who demanded its return. customs officers became suspicious, and secretly opening the package they took photos and made diagrams of the machine inside before returning it to the germans. it turned out to be germany's famous enigma coding machine.
the british and french had so far failed to break the german codes. now, with the help of the photos and diagrams, the brilliant polish cryptologist marian rejewski started to work on the problem, and soon was able to read german enigma traffic. in 1939, five weeks before the german invasion of poland, rejewski and his colleagues presented their results on enigma decryption to british and french intelligence representatives. this contributed significantly to the defeat of nazi germany.
