nearly every photo history book of world war ii shows the picture of american president roosevelt meeting with chiang kai-shek, churchill and stalin. but this historic event might never have occurred.
on 14 november 1943, the uss iowa was on her way to north africa, carrying roosevelt to the summit meeting. the escort ship william d porter was holding a battle drill when it inadvertently fired a torpedo at the iowa. as danger alarms went off, the iowa manoeuvred sharply and avoided the torpedo, which exploded some 3000 yards astern. afterwards, the william d porter's entire crew were placed under arrest, and held for several days as a closed session inquiry found out what had happened.
