in 1346, the tartar army besieged the city of kaffa, which is today's feodosia in the ukraine. they made use of an outbreak of the bubonic plague among their own troops by catapulting bodies of plague victims over the walls of kaffa in an attempt to initiate an epidemic in the city.
the bubonic plague is primarily a disease of rats and other rodents, and the bites of the fleas on rats can transmit the disease to humans. most probably, travelling on their hosts, the fleas also found their way into kaffa.
the defenders subsequently contracted the disease and the city fell to the tartars.
