the siege of boston, which started in april 1775, was the opening phase of the american revolution. the americans, led by general washington, surrounded the city, but for a long time no serious operations were undertaken. then, one morning in january 1776, when the british awoke, they were shocked to find that the hills overlooking boston were bristling with cannons, ready to blow them to kingdom come.
the british decided not to fight, and sent a message to washington saying that if they were allowed to leave unmolested, they would not burn the town. washington agreed.
what the british did not realise was that washington simply did not have the gunpowder required to fire the cannons. the americans were so short on gunpowder that soldiers were given a spear to fight with in the event of a british attack!
