attila, king of the huns and ravager of much of western europe, died a death that was not quite what one would have expected from such a fierce warrior.
in 453 ad, attila took to wife a girl renowned for her beauty. though not a heavy drinker, he drank heavily on the wedding night, and when he retired with his bride to the bedchamber, he passed out flat on his back. it was then that he had a massive nosebleed which caused him to choke to death. apparently, for all his power, he suffered from chronic nosebleeds.
legend says that he was laid to rest in a triple coffin made of gold, silver, and iron. his men diverted a section of the river tisza, buried the coffin under the riverbed, and then were killed to keep the exact location a secret.
