in 452 ad, attila invaded italy. the huns sacked and burned numerous cities. but unintentionally they also did one thing: they helped found the city of venice.
fleeing from the carnage and destruction on the mainland, some roman citizens took to the swamps, finding sanctuary in a desolate group of more than 100 islands in the venetian lagoon. over the centuries, they transformed the inhospitable surroundings into a centre of commerce and tourism.
