ignacy jan paderewski was a polish pianist whose name was once synonymous with the highest level of piano virtuosity. born at a time when poland was under foreign rule, he settled in the united states in 1913.
during world war i, paderewski became an active member of the polish national committee in paris. in 1918, poland regained her independence, and paderewski became its first prime minister. he thus represented poland at the paris peace conference. when he was introduced to georges clemenceau, his french counterpart, clemenceau asked playfully, "are you a cousin of the famous pianist paderewski?"
"i am the famous pianist," paderewski replied.
