pelopidas was a descendant of a wealthy and aristocratic family in thebes. in 382 bc, he fled to athens after the seizure of the theban citadel by the spartans, who installed an oligarchic government and a spartan garrison.
pelopidas was determined to liberate thebes. in 379, he and eleven companions entered the city at different points, dressed as peasants. they then disguised themselves as female dancers at a friend's house, performing for the ruling aristocrats. when they were drunk, pelopidas and his companions took out their daggers and slew them. these things accomplished, they roused the people against the spartan garrison, which eventually surrendered. pelopidas succeeded in re-establishing a democracy in thebes.
