francisco pizarro was a spanish conquistador who destroyed the inca empire in the course of his conquest of peru.
in 1532, pizarro and his force of just 170 soldiers arrived at cajamarca, and found peru under the inca emperor atahualpa, who commanded an army of 80000 men. vicious and greedy, pizarro and his men at first pretended friendship, tricked atahualpa into meeting with them, and then kidnapped him and massacred his unarmed followers. the ransom paid by the incas to release their emperor was filling a room that measured 22 by 17 feet with gold, and two with silver. the spaniards took the ransom, and then get ready to burn atahualpa at the stake until he made a last-minute conversion to christianity, which prompted them to show "mercy": they hanged him instead.
