sir francis drake's most famous exploit. "the singeing of the king of spain's beard" in 1587, by which he burned 30 ships in cadz harbour where they were fitting out for the invasion of england, was carried out despite queen elizabeth's wish to reach a negotiated settlement with spain.
it was with great reluctance that elizabeth gave the order allowing drake to set off. and no sooner had she given the order than she had second thoughts, and another dispatch order was sent racing off to countermand it. drake however had guessed that such a second order might be forthcoming, and as soon as he received the first he put to sea. a speedy boat was sent after him, but curiously enough it failed to locate his fleet. the queen was very angry, but there was nothing she could do to stop him.
