american patriot ethan allen, who commanded the green mountain boys during the revolutionary war, led a surprise attack on the british garrison at ticonderoga on the morning of 10 may 1775. allen got to the british commanding officer's quarters, and shouted at him to come out, or have his entire garrison slaughtered forthwith. when the commander appeared, breeches still in hand, allen ordered the commander to promptly surrender.
"by what authority?" the commander asked.
"in the name of the great jehovah," allen replied, "and the continental congress."
the commander's surrender marked the first american victory in the revolutionary war.
