ironically, the guillotine, which became the symbol of the excesses of the french revolution, was named for a humanitarian physician, joseph guillotin.
a member of the french constituent assembly, guillotin beseeched his fellow revolutionaries to outlaw inhumane forms of execution, arguing that beheading by machine was quicker and less painful than executions by hanging or by the sword. his speech became so well known that, although he neither invented nor designed the device that was subsequently built, his name was attached to it. the guillotine soon took centre stage in the revolution, as 14000 "enemies of the state" were brought to lie beneath its blade.
