after the battle of salamis in 480 bc, in which athens under themistocles used their navy to defeat the much larger persian navy and forced the persian king to retreat, a number of athenian allies were irked by themistocles' frequent demands for money. the andrians were the first to refuse to pay tribute.
themistocles laid siege to the island of andres, and sent the islanders a message: "i bring with me two powerful deities-persuasion and force."
"and we," replied the intrepid islanders, "have two deities equally powerful on our side-poverty and despair."
the andrian deities eventually triumphed, and the siege was raised without effect.
