in october 1944, the japanese circulated bulletins claiming that most of the ships in america's third fleet had been sunk or were retiring. "our ships have been salvaged," admiral halsey, commander of the third fleet, drily replied, "and are retiring at high speed toward the japanese fleet."
on 2 september 1945, the japanese formally surrendered aboard halsey's flagship, the uss missouri.
一九 四 四 年 十 月 ， 日 本 散 布 消 息 ， 說(shuō) 美 國(guó) 第 三 艦 隊(duì) 的 戰(zhàn) 艦 大 半 不 是 被 擊 沉 了 ， 就 是 正在 撤 退 。 第 三 艦 隊(duì) 司 令 哈 爾 西 冷 冷 的 回 答 說(shuō) ： 「 我 們 的 戰(zhàn) 艦 打 撈 起 來(lái) 了 ， 目 前 正 迅速 朝 日 本 艦 隊(duì) 退 去 。 」
