百喻經(jīng)之二: 愚人集牛乳喻
§2 愚人集牛乳喻
(2) the stupid man stores up milk
昔有愚人,將會(huì)賓客,欲集牛乳,以擬供設(shè),而作是念:“我今若預(yù)于日日中轂取牛乳,牛乳漸多,卒無(wú)安處,或復(fù)酢敗。不如即就牛腹盛之,待臨會(huì)時(shí),當(dāng)頓(上殻 下牛)取。”作是念已,便捉牸牛母子,各系異處。
once upon a time there was a stupid man who was about to give a party. he wanted to store up milk for his guests. "if i milk the cow beforehand every day, he thought, little by little, there will be too much of milk and will not be enough space to store it and it may even spoil. it would be better to let it remain inside of the cow. i'll milk the cow right away at the time of the party." he then separated the cow from the calf and tied them up apart.
卻后一月,爾乃設(shè)會(huì),延置賓客,方牽牛來(lái),欲(上殻 下牛)取乳,而此牛乳即干無(wú)有。時(shí)為賓客或嗔或笑。
a month later, he actually gave the reception. he tried to milk the cow, but the milk had run dry. some guests got annoyed and others laughed at him.
愚人亦爾。欲修布施,方言待我大有之時(shí),然后頓施。未及聚頃,或?yàn)榭h官,水火盜賊之所侵奪,或卒命終不及時(shí)施。彼亦如是。
so are the idiotic fellows who want to give alms at once but prefer to wait until they possess great wealth. it usually happens that, before they can scrape together enough money, it is seized by the country officers or taken away by robbers and thieves or by fire and flood. it also happens that, due to their sudden demise, they are not in time for giving alms. this is just like the story of the stupid man who stored up milk.
注釋:
①這是《百喻經(jīng)》中第二個(gè)故事。計(jì)劃設(shè)想得再好,卻因一個(gè)小小的常識(shí)錯(cuò)誤,導(dǎo)致全局的崩潰。在現(xiàn)今的各種決策之中,應(yīng)引以為戒。
②(上殻 下牛)取:擠取,(上殻 下牛)音勾。
③卒無(wú)安處:卒同猝。沒(méi)有盛置的器皿。
④酢敗:酢,酸。酢敗即變質(zhì)發(fā)酸。
⑤頓:即現(xiàn)場(chǎng)。當(dāng)頓,即當(dāng)場(chǎng)。
⑥牸:雌性牲畜。
白話:
從前有個(gè)愚人請(qǐng)客,邀請(qǐng)了諸親好友及地方眾人來(lái)參加宴會(huì),當(dāng)時(shí)該地方以牛乳為最上品,那天必需要有許多牛奶供應(yīng)客人,愚人心想:“我如天天擠牛奶,牛奶漸多,亦無(wú)處安放,過(guò)幾天也會(huì)發(fā)酸變壞。還不如儲(chǔ)存在牛的肚子里,不必每天擠出來(lái),臨到客人前來(lái)宴會(huì)那天,一頓當(dāng)擠出來(lái)豈不是好。”于是他就把所有的母牛和犢牛分開,不給小牛吃奶,只以嫩草青葉飼養(yǎng)母牛,以便生更多的牛奶。到了宴會(huì)那一天,他牽來(lái)所有母牛,要當(dāng)場(chǎng)擠奶來(lái)請(qǐng)客,可是一滴奶也擠不出來(lái)了,賓客看到這種情況,有的心中怨恨,有的忍不住笑話他。
佛說(shuō)愚人也是這樣,想要行布施卻又說(shuō),等我積財(cái)成大款時(shí),然后一頓當(dāng)布施,結(jié)果還未及聚集致富,或被縣官、水火盜賊所侵奪,或到命終時(shí)也來(lái)不及布施了,他們也是同樣的愚癡啊!
源流:
《眾經(jīng)撰雜譬喻經(jīng)》卷上載:昔有一婆羅門,居家貧窮,正(止、只、僅)有一悖牛,(上殻 下牛)乳日得一斗,以自供活。聞?wù)f十五日飯諸眾僧沙門得大福德,便止,不復(fù)(上殻 下牛)牛,停至一月并取,望得三斛,持用供養(yǎng)諸沙門。至滿月,便大請(qǐng)諸沙門至舍皆坐。時(shí)婆羅門即入(上殻 下牛)牛乳,正(止)得一斗。雖久不(上殻 下牛)乳而不多。諸人呵罵言:汝癡人! 云何日日不(上殻 下牛)乃至一月也,而望得多?
今世人亦如是,有財(cái)物時(shí),不能隨多少布施,停積久后,須多乃作。無(wú)常水火及以身命,須臾難保。若當(dāng)不遇,一朝蕩盡,虛無(wú)所獲。(比丘道略集、鳩摩羅什譯,《大正藏》第四冊(cè)第五三二頁(yè))
解說(shuō):
生命飄忽,身外之物,更是聚散不定,因而布施之舉,當(dāng)時(shí)時(shí)實(shí)行,多少無(wú)論,毋須等待什么時(shí)機(jī)。
供您思考:
如今佛弟子發(fā)心修行,并不立即開始,說(shuō)還有兒女的婚事未了,此二件大事辦完,定當(dāng)修行。可是到那時(shí)仍未能修行,因?yàn)閷O子爬到你身上來(lái)了,又沒(méi)空了。結(jié)果光陰一去不再回,既得不到學(xué)修,又抓不回時(shí)光,也與愚人沒(méi)有兩樣。
也有佛弟子天天不肯學(xué)法、修定,說(shuō)等我死了往生他方凈土再開始學(xué)修。結(jié)果到老命終由于不學(xué)佛法未得到智慧,又因達(dá)不到一心不亂未能往生他方世界,佛法的圓融和寶貴的時(shí)光都被自己的愚蠢拋光了。
