during the summer of 1940 the germans were convinced that an invasion of britain was imminent, and even tried to film the event in advance. in early september, a film crew arrived in antwerp in northern belgium, and selected a beach to represent the shores of southern england. for two days invasion barges drew into the shore and german soldiers leaped out and waded shorewards, while light tanks landed on the esplanade under dummy fire. the film crew explained to the puzzled onlookers that as the real invasion would take place at night it would be impossible to film, and as operation sea lion would be the decisive event of the war it was something that hitler did not want his people to miss. so no cost would be spared to make the film as accurate as possible.
