during the american civil war, confederate general thomas jackson won a number of battles against the union forces. his troops believed there was nowhere he would not go to pursue the yankees.
the night of 1 january 1862 was a terrible night. it had been and was still snowing, and a squad of jackson's soldiers were in uncomfortable bivouac. they had built a large fire, and some of them were lying about it, wrapped up in their thin blankets. one soldier drawled, "i wish the yankees were in hell."
around the fire there went a drowsy growl of approbation. one individual, however, said, shivering with cold, "i don't. old jack would follow them there, with our brigade in front."
