anne de montmorency was one of france's foremost generals during the wars between france and spain in the 16th century. he based his tactical philosophy on the headlong charge, with himself at the head of his cavalry, which had more than once left him a prisoner in enemy hands and his army a leaderless rabble. even at 74 he did not seem to have learned the discretion appropriate to his age.
at the battle of st denis in 1567, he was knocked from his horse by a scottish adventurer named robert stuart, who called on him to surrender. montmorency responded by hitting stuart in the face with his sword hilt, knocking out three of the scotsman's front teeth. temporarily allowing his anger to overcome his greed for ransom, stuart pulled out his pistol and shot montmorency in the chest, killing him instantly.
