in november 1940 a german bomber with its night-bombing navigation system ran out of fuel and landed on a beach on the south coast of england. a local army unit, determined that no one should meddle with it, placed two soldiers on guard.
it happened that the plane had landed at low tide. when the sea began to come in, sailors from a nearby naval base came and offered to drag the plane up the beach, but the two guards warned them off. eventually, the plane was submerged in water. by the time the intelligence service technicians arrived, the delicate equipment was spoiled. the loss of this opportunity to study the german bomber may have contributed to britain's failure to block the disastrous raid on coventry eight days later.
