the battle of hastings, fought between harold Ⅱ , king of england, and duke william of normandy on 14 october 1066, was the prelude to the norman conquest of england.
when the normans drew near to the english, duke william's minstrel, taillefer, cried, "i have long served you, sire, and today i ask as my reward that you will allow me to strike the first blow in the battle." and the duke answered, "i grant it."
then taillefer put his horse to a gallop, charging before all the rest, and struck an englishman dead, driving his lance below the breast into his body. then he drew his sword and struck another. the english pushed forward, and surrounded and slew him. thus the battle began.
