On the night of 28 January 1932, the Japanese began the occupation of Chapei, the northwest portion of Shanghai. On unprotected roofs Japanese planes dropped their bombs. With each explosion, towers of dust and smoke shot 150 feet into the air, while beneath these roofs were women, children, and old men.On the second day of the"war", fire from incendiary bombs gutted the Commercial Press and the Oriental Library. Only a few books were saved from the wonderful collection of Chinese works valued at millions of dollars. The Library building burned for three days. And for a month bombs were dropped on the Chapei district. By the time hostilities had ceased, not a building in all Chapei remained undamaged.
