british general james wolfe was considered mad by some of his rivals in the army. in 1759, a banquet was given in his honour the night before he set sail for america to seize french canada. at the end of the meal, he leapt to his feet, drew his sword and rapped on the table to attract everyone's attention. he then began striding round the room, flourishing his sword and boasting of what he was going to do to the french when he met them. then he marched abruptly out of the room and was gone.
prime minister william pitt was shocked. "good god!" he said. "and i have trusted the fate of the country to that man." what pitt did not know was that wolfe was an abstainer and the wine he had had had gone straight to his head.
