the british regular soldier in the napoleonic wars had a toughness that was proverbial. he was intolerant of those who did not share his stoicism in the face of suffering. one such soldier, awaiting treatment in a british field hospital, was angry at the screams of a french casualty lying alongside him. as soon as the frenchman's arm had been amputated, the british soldier seized the severed limb by the wrist and hit the frenchman a sharp blow with it, saying, “ here, take that, and stuff it down your throat and stop your damned bellowing. ”
