during napoleon's russian campaign of 1812 many french senior officers lost their lives or suffered severe injuries. marshal oudinot's wife eugenie recorded her premonition of such a disaster: “ i was expecting a bust of my husband which a fairly talented artist in berlin had modelled at the end of our stay in that city. one morning the arrival of an enormous case from germany was announced. i dragged my mother with me and eagerly hurried on the opening. i saw the first, the second and finally the last wrapping paper removed. what was my shock on seeing that one of the shoulders of the plaster was mutilated and about to break away from the body! ominous thoughts seized my imagination. this foreboding was to be realised only too well since a few days later my husband had his shoulder smashed by grapeshot. ”
