on the night of 28 november 1944, the american submarine archerfish was patrolling off the coast of tokyo. the watchstanders on the bridge had visually sighted the island of inamba shima when the boat's radar officer joe bosza reported, "radar contact 030 degrees."
"joe, no matter what your radar shows, inamba shima is at 060 degrees," the captain said dismissively.
"aye, aye, sir," came the meek reply from below.
but only a few seconds later, bosza announced, "captain, your island is moving."
the radar had detected japan's aircraft carrier shinano, built in the utmost secrecy. archerfish fired six torpedoes, and sank shinano, which was only 17 hours into her maiden voyage. shinano was the largest aircraft carrier ever constructed before 1954.
