On 8 December 1942, radar in the United States picked up a plane coming from the direction of Japan. Two pilots were sent to intercept it. When they approached the mysterious plane, they were shocked to find a bullet-riddled American fighter with landing gear blown away. The blood-stained pilot, slumped over the controls, turned his head in their direction, smiled, and waved feebly. Moments later the plane plummeted towards the earth. Little remained to identify the pilot, but some sort of diary was found. From this diary, it was deduced that the plane had come from the Philippines. Probably, the pilot was one of the American soldiers who refused to surrender when the Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941, and cannibalising parts from downed planes, they readied the fighter for one final flight. 一 九 四 二 年 十 二 月 八 日 ， 美 國 雷 達 偵 察 到 有 飛 機 從 日 本 方 向 飛 來 。 兩 名 飛 行 員 奉 命 前 去 攔 截 ， 逼 近 那 神 秘 飛 機 時 ， 訝 然 發 覺 是 一 架 美 國 戰 斗 機 ， 機 身 彈 孔 累 累 ， 連 起 落 架 都 被 轟 掉 ， 機 上 飛 行 員 渾 身 血 污 ， 倒 在 駕 駛 儀 器 板 上 ， 轉 頭 望 向 他 們 ， 微 微 一 笑 ， 軟 弱 的 揮 揮 手 ， 然 后 飛 機 就 朝 地 面 直 摔 下 去 。 憑 墜 機 現 場 所 得 ， 不 足 以 辨 認 那 飛 行 員 的 身 分 。 不 過 ， 飛 機 上 找 到 類 似 日 記 的 文 件 ， 從 中 可 推 斷 飛 機 來 自 菲 律 賓 。 也 許 ， 那 飛 行 員 是 一 九 四 一 年 十 二 月 日 軍 攻 占 菲 律 賓 時 不 肯 投 降 的 美 軍 之 一 。 那 些 美 軍 從 被 擊 落 的 飛 機 上 拆 取 零 件 ， 裝 在 這 戰 斗 機 上 ， 作 最 后 一 次 飛 行 。
