the battle of pavia in 1525, between the french and the spanish, marked the end of the supremacy of the armoured knight in the face of cannon and firearms. during the battle many heavily armoured french knights met unpleasant ends at the hands of spanish fusiliers. la tremoille was particularly unfortunate. a spaniard lifted the iron flaps guarding his thighs and thrust in an arquebus, blowing him to pieces inside his armour. saint-severin, the master of the french king's horseguards, had the top of his head severed by a sword blow but remanined fixed in his saddle, while his horse raced madly about. his body was riddled with over a hundred shots but nothing could dislodge him. the superstitious spanish soldiers crossed themselves in fear as the indestructible frenchman rode by.
