the commander-in-chief of the british army in the second half of the 19th century, the duke of cambridge （ a grandson of george Ⅲ ） , was not renowned for his intelligence. he had served as a divisional commander in the crimean war. once, accompanying the legendary florence nightingale around the wards of a hospital in the crimea, cambridge recognised a sergeant who had served in his division. the man had suffered appalling wounds and, addressing him by name, the duke jokingly inquired, “ aren't you dead yet? ”
after the duke had left, the man told nightingale, “ so feeling of his royal highness, wasn't it, madam? bless his heart, he wondered why i'm not dead yet! ”
