at the battle of copenhagen in 1801, horatio nelson in the elephant was acting under admiral sir hyde parker, a rather cautious commander in chief. when the signal number 39 （ for leave off action ） was shown on board sir hyde's flagship, nelson observed to captain foley, “ you know, foley, i have only one eye. i have a right to be blind sometimes. ” and then putting the glass to his blind eye he exclaimed, “ i really do not see the signal. ”
he led the attack on the danish fleet. eventually the british, with nelson commanding the smaller vessels that bore the brunt of the engagement, destroyed the greater part of the fleet.
