on 9 october 1914 the german cruiser emden arrived at diego garcia, a small coral island in the indian ocean. it was a lonely place, so much so that word of the outbreak of war in europe had not yet reached it. muller, the german captain, decided to complete some repairs here.
when the english manager of the coconut plantation, along with his assistant, visited the ship, the germans hurriedly concealed newspapers which might give away the fact that war had broken out, and plied them with whisky. the englishman was even more delighted when muller sent two engineers to repair his motor boat. in return, he sent a boat to the emden loaded with fresh fruit, fish, vegetables and a pig. international friendship was the order of the day on diego garcia, while in flanders the british and germans were slaughtering each other in thousands.
