One morning in 1944, when two French cyclists watched four GIs pick up a huge tank and turn it around, the 603rd Engineer Camouflage Battalion almost blew its cover. The tank was inflated rubber, and the 603rd belonged to the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, whose job was to fool the Germans.The special weapons of the battalion included dummy planes, tanks, and antiaircraft guns. To enable a combat unit to change positions or to attack while the Germans thought it had not moved at all, the 1800 men of the 23rd impersonated entire divisions. They would move in at night, and inflate their rubber dummies. Meanwhile the troops they were replacing sneaked away.When the 9th Army was trying to cross the Rhine in 1945, the 23rd created the illusion of a huge buildup at Viersen. Consequently, the real crossing took the Germans completely by surprise.
一九四四年一天早上，四個美國軍人把一輛巨型坦克車輕輕提起，轉過來，剛巧給兩名騎著腳踏車路過的法國人看見。第六○三工兵偽裝營幾乎就露出廬山面目。那輛坦克車只是充氣橡膠，而六○三營隸屬第二十三支司令部特別部隊，這支部隊的任務，是愚弄德軍。六○三營的特別武器包括假的飛機、坦克車、高射炮。第二十三支部隊的一千八百人，可以偽裝成一師師的軍隊，這樣，戰斗部隊轉移陣地或進擊，德軍都不會知道，還以為對方還在原地。第二十三支部隊會乘夜而來，把橡皮道具充氣，取代悄悄離去的戰斗部隊。一九四五年，第九軍計劃渡過萊茵河，第二十三支部隊就在菲爾森區擺出軍隊大規模集結的假象。第九軍渡河時，德軍完全沒有準備。
