in august 1914, the territorial highland division was moved from the sparsely populated areas of the highlands of scotland to bedford, a densely populated area. the scots soldiers had little immunity to the childhood ailments almost universally experienced by children in urban areas. soon hospitals were flooded, not with wounded soldiers from flanders and france, but with territorials who fell victims to mumps, measles and chicken pox. many cases were serious - 85 men died in three months and hundreds were out of action for lengthy periods. the strain on nurses was severe, but it did serve as an introduction to war work for hundreds of young voluntary nurses.
