in 1209, simon de montfort led a crusade against the cathars in southern france and took the town of beziers. when the town was sacked, a question arose over how its upstanding christians might be distinguished from the damned heretics. monfort's solution was simple:"kill them all. the lord will know his own."..tens of thousands of men, women, and children were consequently killed.
一二○九年，一支十字軍由孟福爾率領，進犯法國南部卡特里派教徒，攻下了貝濟耶城，準備洗劫，問題是難以分辨城中持守正道的基督教徒和罪該萬死的異端教徒。孟福爾有個很簡單的辦法：「格殺勿論。天主之徒，天主自會分辨。」數以萬計成年男女以至兒童于是被殺。
【解說】christian就是基督徒，但「基督（christ）徒」三字常被誤解。年前我有文章說「曾蔭權是基督徒」，不少讀者就來信說「他其實是天主教徒」，殊不知christians包括天主教徒（catholics）和新教徒（protestants）。假如十六世紀興起的新教才可稱為基督教，天主教徒胸前就不得掛耶穌基督的十字架了。
