一八一二年博羅迪諾一役，法軍雖然打敗了俄軍，但雙方傷亡同樣慘重。事實上，拿破侖認為這是他戎馬生涯最可怕的一役。戰爭次日，他和幾名武官騎馬巡視戰場，看見一個垂死士兵痛苦不堪，就叫人抬來擔架。有從者說：「陛下，他是我們的敵人。」拿破侖回答：「戰勝后，就沒有敵，只有人。」
