at noon on 1 january 1863, with the emancipation proclamation laid before him for signature, president lincoln twice took up his pen, and twice set it down. "i've been shaking hands since nine o'clock this morning, and my right arm is almost paralysed," he said. "if my hand trembles when i sign the proclamation, all who examine the document hereafter will say, 'he hesitated.'" then he collected his pen and affixed his signature with particular care.
一八六三年一月一日中午，林肯總統(tǒng)兩次拿起鋼筆，準(zhǔn)備簽署面前的《解放宣言》，但又兩次放下筆來(lái)。他說(shuō)：「我今天早上九點(diǎn)鐘開始，不斷和人握手，右手都麻痹了。假如簽名時(shí)手顫抖，以后審視這份文件的人就會(huì)說(shuō)：『他有點(diǎn)猶豫。』」林肯說(shuō)罷，拿起筆，小心翼翼在文件上簽了字。
