in 482 b.c., the dispute between athenian statesmen themistocles and aristides on how best to meet the persian menace had grown bitter. themistocles was brilliant but shifty, while aristides was so honest that he was called aristides the just. the only way out was to have a vote to determine which of them should be ostracised. in the course of the vote, one illiterate athenian called on a passerby to help him.
the passerby, who happened to be aristides, asked which name to put down. the voter said, “ aristides! ”
aristides put down his own name, then asked, “ has aristides done something of which you disapprove? ” “ not at all, ” said the voter, “ but i'm tired of hearing him referred to as the just. ”
