during world war i, viscountess nancy astor set up a red cross hospital at cliveden. a very young canadian soldier, badly wounded, awakened to consciousness to see her gazing down at him. not knowing who she was, he said weakly, “ you're the kind of person i'd like to take back with me as my wife. ” nancy smiled. “ give me time to think it over, ” she said softly.
when the soldier became stronger, he realised to his embarrassment that he had proposed to none other than the formidable nancy astor herself. the next time he saw her, he broke into confused apologies. nancy laughed. “ i haven't had such a compliment for years. ”
