in 1807 the french under napoleon were campaigning in germany, against the prussians and russians.
while fishing in a lake near peterswald, east prussia, a french soldier hooked something heavy and brought a corpse to the surface. further investigation produced the naked bodies of thirty-seven french soldiers and one woman, all obviously killed in their sleep by hatchet blows. they had been reported missing and were thought to be prisoners of war. peterswald was surrounded and searched; their uniforms and weapons were found. thirty-eight villagers were shot and the village burned.
