in 1933, soon after hitler became chancellor of germany, einstein renounced his german citizenship and left the country. one hundred nazi professors published a book entitled one hundred authors against einstein, condemning his theory of relativity. "if i were wrong," einstein said, "one professor would have been enough."
hitler cared little about the consequences of jewish scientists being fired en masse. "if science cannot do without jews," he said, "then we will have to do without science for a few years." but for hitler's misjudgement, the nazis would almost certainly have beaten america in the race to develop nuclear weapons.
