in 73 bc, the famed thracian gladiator spartacus led a slave revolt in italy. after inflicting numerous defeats on the roman armies sent against him, he dominated much of south italy. he was killed in battle in 71 bc, when roman generals crassus and pompey put down the revolt. they crucified 6000 captured slaves along the appian way, the highway into rome, as a warning to other slaves.
