the wars of religion in france, arising out of the struggle of the french protestants for religious liberty, were remarkable for their unparalleled ruthlessness, as may be seen in the pacification of guyenne by montluc, a royalist general, in 1562. montluc had won montsegur by storm, and its commander had been taken alive. the latter was a man of valour, and in a previous campaign had been montluc's fellow soldier and friend. for that reason many interceded for his life, but montluc decided to hang him, and simply on account of his valour. “ i knew him to be valiant, but that made me the rather put him to death, ” he said afterwards.
