a man cut off in his prime on the battlefield can rarely be considered to have died of natural causes, but such was the fate of anthony of bourbon, king of navarre, who joined the catholics in fighting against the huguenots in the french wars of religion. during the siege of rouen in 1562, as he was waiting his turn to ascend a scaling ladder, anthony's excitement got the better of him and he felt the call of nature. unlacing part of his armour to facilitate the process, he was struck and killed by a musket ball.
