Nursing in wartime has its heartbreaking moments. In the American Civil War, there was a young soldier who had an artery severed, but did not suspect any serious trouble. When the nurse told him that the wound was fatal, he received the verdict courageously, and gave the nurse directions by which his mother would be informed of his death. Then he asked, “ How long can I live? ” “ Only as long as I keep my finger upon this artery to stop the blood gushing out. ” A silence ensued. God alone knew what thoughts passed through that heart, called so unexpectedly from all earthly hopes and ties. Finally the soldier said gently to the nurse : “ You can let go. ” Here is the nurse's account of what happened next : “ Hot tears rushed to my eyes, a surging sound to my ears and a deathly coldness to my lips. The pang of obeying him was spared me .... I fainted away. ”
戰(zhàn) 時(shí) 看 護(hù) 傷 兵 ， 有 時(shí) 令 人 心 碎 。 美 國(guó) 內(nèi) 戰(zhàn) 期 間 ， 一 名 年 輕 士 兵 斷 了 一 條 動(dòng) 脈 ， 卻 以 為 傷 勢(shì) 并 不 嚴(yán) 重 ， 后 來 聽 見 護(hù) 士 告 訴 他 那 是 致 命 傷 ， 表 現(xiàn) 十 分 堅(jiān) 強(qiáng) ， 先 護(hù) 士 怎 樣 聯(lián) 絡(luò) 他 母 親 通 知 死 訊 ， 然 后 問 ： 「 我 還 可 活 多 久 ？ 」 「 一 旦 我 的 手 指 不 按 這 動(dòng) 脈 防 止 血 液 噴 出 ， 你 就 會(huì) 死 亡 。 」 跟 是 一 陣 沉 默 。 這 士 兵 心 理 上 毫 無 準(zhǔn) 備 ， 忽 然 要 放 棄 人 世 一 切 希 望 和 關(guān) 系 ， 有 甚 么 感 想 ， 只 有 天 知 道 。 最 后 他 輕 輕 對(duì) 護(hù) 士 說 ： 「 你 可 以 放 手 了 。 」 跟 的 事 ， 請(qǐng) 看 護(hù) 士 的 記 述 ： 「 我 眼 睛 涌 出 熱 淚 ， 耳 朵 轟 鳴 ， 嘴 唇 感 到 冰 冷 。 我 幸 而 得 免 如 他 所 請(qǐng) 放 開 手 指 的 痛 苦 … … 我 昏 倒 了 。 」
