several russian generals displayed a marked lack of common sense in world war i. general kuropatkin, for instance, once planned a night attack on the german lines in an effort to break the stalemate imposed by the trench system. he set up an array of searchlights in order to dazzle the germans. he then sent his men over the top, only for them to be shot down in thousands. he did not realise that they would be silhouetted against the lights and therefore make easy targets. the russians lost 8000 men in a single night.
