when the idealism of the french revolution gave way to the excesses of the reign of terror, not every revolutionist went along. late in 1793 the journalist camille desmoulins began to counsel moderation, calling for an end to the executions.
robespierre, leader of the reign of terror, would not listen. to show his anger at the defection of his old ally, robespierre burned a copy of desmoulins ’ newspapers at the jacobin club. the journalist, who was present, rose to his feet. recognising the fate that now awaited him, he said calmly, “ to burn is not to reply. ”
