the english invaded france in 1339, and the french accepted their challenge to give battle. on 23 october, both armies assembled in battle formation, but as no agreement had been made on who was to attack first, the situation entered a stalemate.
suddenly a great roar was heard from the english ranks. a french commander immediately knighted several senior officers (a ceremony preceding a battle), thinking that the english were beginning their attack. but the fact was two hares had been sighted in the midst of the english lines, and the english soldiers had given pursuit until both wretched animals had been bagged. the new french knights became the butt of many a joke, earning notoriety as the knights of the order of the hare. finally, no battle took place and both sides withdrew, the casualties being limited to two dead hares.
