when napoleon invaded egypt in 1798, general denon took part of the army down the nile. on the morning of 27 january, as the sun rose over the river, the magnificent ruined temples of karnak and luxor were revealed as if in a dream to the battle-hardened french troops. spontaneously the men broke out into applause and, without orders, stood at attention and presented arms in homage to the ancient egyptians who had built these wonders.
