The Stream
One very hot summer day little Billy was walking along the country road. His cheeks were red from the heat and he was dying of thirst. Soon he arrived at a stream that made its way out of the rocks near a green oak tree.
Billy knew very well that it was dangerous to drink water when he was in a heat, but to show off, he gave no thought whatsoever to this warning and thinking only of his wish, he began to drink mouthful after mouthful of icy cold water. He felt himself become weak and fell to the ground in a faint. Returning home a very sick boy, he was stricken with a high fever.
“Oh!” he moaned, when he was in his bed, “who would ever think that that clear stream could contain such a harmful poison?”
But his father replied: “The clear stream is not to be blamed at all of your sickness, but the main cause is your presumption and intemperance.”
